When we visited the home for under 5 year olds my heartstrings were pulled at. Now that I have my own child, it breaks my heart to meet children who are not able to be with their families. I just wanted to pick them all up and give them big hugs.

Living in a place that was away from the hustle and bustle of the usual tourist spots gave me a greater insight into the Ecuadorian way of life. At this point, I was desperate for money, so I started working in the hostel for free accommodation and took on any other jobs I could get. Mel and I lay on the beach and talked about life, swam and surfed constantly, met new friends and generally made the most of living in such a magical spot for a short moment in time. I returned home and sold my store and planned to move to Australia for a year. This was one of the biggest decisions of my life so far. But even though I felt nervous, I felt very alive. I didn’t feel brave at all. I was scared. But not of moving overseas alone and not of what would happen once I got there. I was terrified of the alternative. I planned and trained, and all the while gained more confidence each day for the adventure ahead. I will admit I did have butterflies the actual evening of my departure. |
